An elegant lacquered qalamdan (pen case), Persia, likely late 19th to early 20th century, masterfully hand-painted with a continuous floral tableau. The surface bursts with naturalistic blooms—roses, irises, and narcissus—set against a deep cobalt ground, their vivid pigments and delicate outlines speaking to the enduring Persian love of botanical ornament. Executed in fine lacquer over papier-mâché, the form is quintessential: gently curved edges, sliding inner tray, and black-lacquered base. While the qalamdan traditionally served as a scholar’s essential, housing reed pens and ink, its surface became a canvas for narrative, allegory, or decorative splendor. This example, free from figural elements, exemplifies refined restraint and rhythmic composition, drawing the viewer into an idealized garden—a golshan of timeless beauty.
